  • Safe – Avoids causing harm.

  • Accountable and Transparent – Clearly assigned responsibilities and visibility into decisions.
  • Explainable and Interpretable – Outputs and decisions can be understood.
  • Privacy-Enhanced – Protects personal and sensitive data.
  • Fair and Bias-Managed – Avoids harmful discrimination in outcomes.

These traits serve as benchmarks. For example, if a bank uses an AI model that’s accurate but not explainable, it may fail to meet customer expectations or regulatory scrutiny. Aligning with NIST’s trustworthiness goals helps institutions identify such gaps and take corrective action—such as conducting bias audits or adding model explainability tools.

The U.S. Treasury has noted that the NIST AI RMF aligns with financial institutions’ existing risk governance expectations, reinforcing its relevance. By adopting this framework, firms not only meet best practices but also demonstrate a proactive, responsible approach to AI governance.
